I had the pleasure of heading to the beautiful German city of Hamburg this past weekend. What a gorgeous town with delicious food and even more amazing architecture! Hamburg has been celebrated for some of its modern architectural designs, so I decided to take a look for myself. The only question was, what was I going to wear?

In a city that's beside a massive river (the Elbe, as I found out) the temperature can get quite low for UK standards. So I needed something sturdy enough to keep me warm yet stylish. Even more pressing, what style or pattern? Do I go ultra modern and sleek, or do I bring a little of Britain along with me?

I like wearing traditional British patterns and cuts in modern settings - something about the juxtaposition of old world chic and new world design, just really compliments both so well. I decided on a longline brushed check overcoat (boohoo.com) with a classic cut that stopped right above the knee. These days I really tend to avoid most overcoats that go past the knee. They sometimes can feel a bit too clunky and inelegant.

Wearing some leather gloves (Calvin Klein) a thick Abercrombie and Fitch jumper and grey Giorgio Armani scarf, I could have easily have been wandering the banks of the Thames. When you wear something as special as the overcoat, you don't need to pair it with anything too crazy to stand out. Pick the one piece you want to shine and go for it.

At the end of the day, I was inspired by all the modern buildings and innovative architecture. Do you have any buildings or places that inspire your wardrobe? I'd love to hear from you and your sartorial inspirations!
